Because I like text so much, I enjoy adding it to my jewelry in any way, shape, or form. For instance, when I work in resin, I usually add text that has been stamped or written upon scraps of paper. When working in polymer clay, I often add text and texture using rubber stamps, as I did on this bangle. However, because the opposite side of the bangle has a brass sheet applique, the text was imprinted on the sheet with steel stamps before the sheet was attached. The sentence “The road to love is sometimes a bit bumpy” was imprinted first, then I added a
bumpy texture using a hammer that has a small, somewhat pointed head. A steel chasing tool was then used to add tiny dents along the inside and outside edges of the brass sheet. Jax Brown-Black Brass, Bronze, and Copper Darkener was applied so the words could be more easily seen. Cutting punches were employed in several areas of the sheet, allowing the polymer clay to show through. For additional embellishment, small rounds of silver and copper sheet were cut out using a disc cutter. They were then rounded into half spheres using a dapping punch. Holes were drilled through the centers of the spheres, as well as the brass sheet which was aligned with the polymer clay bangle. Finally, tiny rivets of brass and balled argentium silver wire were hammered in place with the aid of a small ball-peen hammer. When all is said and done, I often wonder if my customers realize that a lot of engineering and many steps go into the making of a single piece.
