This is what the aftermath of a Derecho looks like…
Monday night was horrific! As we witnessed menacing, greenish-purple clouds heading toward us over the Mississippi River, we hunkered down in the lower level of our home. Torrential rain pounded sideways against our windows and then, all of a sudden, swirled in a circular typhoon-like motion. It was more than a storm…this was a Derocho, which causes hurricane-force winds, heavy rains, and flash floods. The beautiful forest surrounding our home took quite a beating. Many trees split, some cracked off fifteen to twenty feet above ground, and others toppled over as winds up to 90mph whipped through knocking down or damaging everything in sight. Cleanup will take weeks. I’d like to think this is the last we will see of such violent weather, but with climate change and warming temperatures, I fear there will be many more to come. On the bright side, I can’t help but wonder if surviving an experience such as this will stimulate creativity and new ideas…food for thought!
