I’ve never been one to record my daily musings…
I remember receiving a diary as a birthday present when I was nine years old. I filled a total of two pages. Frankly, the closest I’ve come to journaling has been writing my blog. Somehow, it’s different when you know that hundreds of people may see what you write. Nevertheless, I’ve always been fascinated by journals with interesting covers. In my exploration of polymer clay, I decided to create a journal cover and back joined with corded thread, which can be removed to add new sheets of paper. I started with a base of two sheets of polymer clay colored using the Skinner method (named for Judith Skinner who created the technique of running different colors of clays repeatedly through a pasta machine to achieve a gradient-blended sheets of color). I then applied extremely thin incised sheets of textured polymer clay to embellish and allow areas of the base clay to show through. Lastly, a light dusting of gold pearlescent powder was brushed on. It's very tactile and I love the way it feels in my hands - even though it's doubtful I'll ever write anything in it!
