I’ve always been a fan of those classic 1950’s movies about gigantic creatures – “Rodan”, “Them”, “Godzilla”, ‘Tarantula” to name a few. When I was about twelve years old, I started reading Jules Vern novels. The very idea of colossal underwater creatures was both frightening and exciting! While playing with polymer clay, I thought it might be interesting to create an octopus and incorporate some beading into the design. The result is this “Deep Sea Diving” pendant. I used Premo polymer clay by Sculpey because I prefer its strength and flexibility. A long 20 gauge headpin runs through the body making it appear that the Octopus is clutching a large jewel in its legs – it’s actually a round 6mm Swarovski olivine crystal. The body of the octopus is covered with tiny Japanese seed beads in antique gold, metallic teal and purple, and bright lime and worked in Ndebele stitch. The pendant glides along an oxidized sterling silver chain. It was a very fun project to make and it’s not scary at all!
