Another piece for my Brio trunk show…

My previous series of fibulae (functional brooches used to adorn and fasten clothing) were well received at Brio Gallery so I’m making more for the upcoming show.  Combining bronze metal clay and wire with silver, polymer and epoxy resin clays, as well as beads of bone and semi-precious gemstones, these brooches will be included in my “Bronze Age” collection.  This particular brooch features a large bronze metal clay bead.  I’ve covered the bottom half in textured epoxy resin clay, which gives a nice contrast.  Tiny daggers of fine silver flank the focal bead. Seashell and urchin components made of bronze metal clay and beads of agate, onyx, and bone complete the piece.  Measuring a substantial 3” x 2”, it is sturdy enough to hold fast a heavy shawl or cloak.  Of course, it would look great on sweater too.  Fibulae are great fun to create and I’ll be making more of these in the coming weeks.
