I truly did not expect a gift because I’ve never given birth. My motherly instinct goes only as far as loving and caring for our two cats. But my husband surprised me with this sculpture on Mother’s Day and I am thrilled with it! Artists Jim and Tori Mullan, who specialize in bird sculptures, each made from recycled watch parts, game pieces, and found objects, created this piece. I had seen this and several other sculptures made by the Mullan team at Brio Gallery weeks ago and was immediately drawn to them. One bird, perched on wheels, wore a beanie topped with a propeller – how novel! But I liked this piece best. I’m not an avid birdwatcher, although I will take up binoculars to watch pelicans gliding in ribbon-like fashion along the river. This colorful bird perched on binoculars instead watches me!
