I’m taking a metals class from Jeff Fulkerson at Bead&Button, I’m packing my travel case with the required hammers (ball peen, chasing, riveting, and rawhide) as well as V-block, bracelet mandrel, anvil, tin snips, ruler, and bench block. I’ll be making a fold-formed cuff, which should be a lot of fun. Having made a simple pendant using the technique several years ago, I haven’t really delved into fold-forming in a big way, but I certainly have the tools with which to do so as well as several good DVDs and books. My latest acquisition is “Creative Metal Forming” by Betty Helen Longhi and Cynthia Eid. Although it contains a photo gallery of interesting fold-formed works, this is by no means a “coffee table” picture book. Rather it is a true text-book filled with information for creating any conceivable shape one might wish to make. I can assure you that it will be my go-to reference for all things fold-formed! Below is my first attempt at fold-forming…a simple pendant titled “Pea Pod”. A textured copper fold-formed shell holds polymer clay peas. It is a rather thin piece of metal…you can better see the fold-formed copper pod if you look at its reflection! It dangles from a silver chain accented with a coil of Argentium sterling wire and another coil made of bead-woven seed beads.
